Background

Originally born in Libya, Zaena's family re-located from the North African country to the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, at the age of six because her parents wanted to give her more opportunities to succeed. Her transition led to the discovery of music in elementary school, and continued to have a positive impact on her life as she moved through her high school years. During her transition from childhood to adulthood, she realized that pursuing a life of music was the only option for her.

Music career

Zaena spent considerable amount of time in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Los Angeles, California, where she booked a singing and songwriting deal as an artist with a record company. After creating a few songs and cutting a couple of tracks, she eventually parted ways and returned to Chicago in 2011 to start fresh. In mid-2012, she met fellow Chicago musician Jason Sizer, who is a recording artist under the name Jason Maek and co-founder of Maek.

Zaena’s debut EP, Harlequin, was released by the record label Maek. Following her successful performances at SXSW, she was named one of top ten artists to look out for by Elicit Magazine in 2014.

Reception

Released on March 25, "Harlequin EP is a six-track collection featuring Zaena smoothly laying her voice over a mesh of electropop music, fueled with EDM flavor. The EP deals with a mixture of emotions on the societal perception of women throughout time. Thought provoking at times, along with its enchanting ability to alter moods, Harlequin EP commands a certain level of respect. Amassing a lot of blog coverage and placement, the single managed to acquire over 150,000 views online and over 25,000 downloads. The project was streamed over 100,000 times. On October 6, 2014, Zaena released her first collaborative studio album with Maek. It set several historical milestones as the first visual album released in electronic music history and the first from an independent label. The Maek Pandamonium Visual Album weaves 17 visually captivating music videos into one cohesive storyline. On the day of its release over 40 colleges and universities held individual watch parties. Harvard University and Lincoln University in New Zealand are two among the many that participated in celebrating the album release. It features 18 continuous music videos woven into an abstract storyline and has racked up more than 140,000 views on YouTube and Vevo.
