Aynaw was born in the village of Chahawit in Ethiopia's Gondar Province. Growing up in Gondar Province, she led a "poor" but "often happy" childhood. Her father died a year or two after her birth and her mother died when she was 10 years old, leaving her an orphan. With her brother Yellek Aynaw, she moved to Israel to live with her grandparents when she was twelve. The family lived in Netanya, Israel. Initially, she struggled to assimilate, having to learn a different language and adapt to a new culture. However, she soon "threw herself at it," learning Hebrew and later serving in Israel's military. In high school, Aynaw served as student body president, participated in track and field, and entered a national student film competition, winning first place.

Aynaw's win was characterized by some members of the Ethiopian-Israeli community as being positive for Ethiopian-born Israelis.
