History

Yahiko shrine was already well established when a new building was created by Imperial edict in the 8th century. The enshrined kami is

  • Ameno-Kaguyama-no-Mikoto (天香山命) who is said to have taught people how to produce salt from seawater.
  • Yahiko was one of the chief Shinto shrines (ichinomiya) of the old Echigo Province. It serves today as one of the ichinomiya of Niigata Prefecture.

The present shrine was rebuilt in 1916. The earlier shrine buildings were destroyed by a 1912 fire which started in the village.
