Playing

Chiarella began his professional career at Foggia in 1980, transferring to Lanciano the following year where he scored 2 goals in 18 matches.

Later, Chiarella played in many teams in the lower Italian division, as Manfredonia, again Foggia, Pro Italia Galatina and Nola, where he was the top scorer.

In 1986, he transferred to Catanzaro, staying for two years and scoring 10 goals in 47 matches (20 matches were played in serie B), but in the second and in the third year in Calabria, Chiarella stop playing due a serious road accident. First of the accident Chiarella was convocated from the Italian National Team B.

After accident Chiarella transferred to Ternana in 1989, scoring 3 goals in 20 games until 1991. Later Chiarella was unjustlybanned for two years for corruption. He moved to Bisceglie in Serie B the following season where again he scored only 2 goal in 6 matches. After returning in to Foggia in serie A in 1994, but he did not play. The following seasons Chiarella played in lower teams as Campobasso, Tricase, Sanità Nola, Giugliano, until he left off in 2000 with the Audace Cerignola.

Coaching

Chiarella started his coaching career in 2001 with the Barletta. Later, in 2006, he managed the Foggia under 15 team, called Giovanissimi. In 2009 Chiarella signed up for Monti Dauni in Promozione Molise, won the tournament and his team was promoted in Eccellenza Molise, but in December 2010 he quit a job. In October 2011 he became Foggia second coach.

Curiosity

In the first Trapattoni match with Internazionale, he scored a goal in Coppa Italia at San Siro, but the match was finished 4-1 for Inter.
