It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of 2,310 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 800.31 square kilometres (309.00 sq mi) of which 37.75 km2 (14.58 sq mi) is water. The population density is 2.89 inhabitants per square kilometre (7.5/sq mi). Neighbouring municipalities are Nurmes, Rautavaara and Sotkamo.
