Valluvangad

Valluvangad or Velluvangad (Malayalam -വെള്ളുവങ്ങാട്) is one of the largest villages located in the Malappuram district, in the state of Kerala, India. It is situated in Pandikkad Panchayath. Valluvangad is 20km from the district headquarters of Malappuram. Nearby cities are Manjeri (10km) and Pandikkad (3km). The Kadalundi river runs close to the village. Agriculture is the primary source of income. Valluvangad is unique in Kerala for its diverse mix of religions, and is the birthplace of Ali Musliyar and Variyan Kunnan Kunhumuhammed Haji, the leaders of the 1921 Moplah Rebellion, and was the scene of fighting in that rebellion, including the destruction of a nearby bridge.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Valluvangad had a population of 17641 with 8554 males and 9087 females.

Culture

Valluvangad is unique in Kerala for its diverse mix of religions. The town is a predominantly Muslim populated area. Hindus exist in comparatively smaller numbers, so the local culture is predominantly Muslim. Duff Muttu, Kolkali and Aravanamuttu are common folk arts of this locality. There are many libraries attached to mosques affording a rich resource for Islamic studies. Most of the books are written in Arabi-Malayalam, a version of the Malayalam language written in Arabic script. People gather in mosques for the evening prayer and after prayers discuss social and cultural issues. Business and family issues are also addressed during these evening meetings. The Hindu minority of this area maintain their traditions by celebrating various festivals in their temples. Hindu rituals are part of regular devotion as in other parts of Kerala.

Transportation

Valluvangad village connects to other parts of India through Manjeri town. National highway No.66 passes through Parappanangadi and the northern stretch connects to Goa and Mumbai. The southern stretch connects to Cochin and Trivandrum. National Highway No.966 connects to Palakkad and Coimbatore. The nearest airport is at Kozhikode. The nearest major railway station is at Tirur.
