History
The transit center was built in 2006 to provide an easy transfer location for AC Transit buses. Before it was built there were serious vehicular circulation issues. The location at Broadway and 19th Street is a downtown area subject to heavy congestion from private cars, cyclists, taxis, and buses.
In 2010 it was established as a "pulse" transfer point by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission for All nighter buses. This orchestrates a simultaneously meeting of several bus lines to facilitate a safe and timed transfer between midnight and 5 AM. Passengers from San Francisco transfer here from the 800, to meet other 800-series routes to stations along the Richmond-Fremont BART line, to Rockridge and other areas served by late night/early morning service.
