History
A part of the University of Washington, the University of Washington School of Dentistry admitted its first students in 1946. The school accepts 63 pre-doctoral students annually and is known as one of the leading and most prestigious dental schools in the United States, pioneering dental-medical research worldwide. In addition, the school also admits five to eight students each year in its International DDS program, in which foreign students already holding a DDS or equivalent degree take the third and fourth years of the pre-doctoral curriculum with a goal of gaining U.S. licensure. The University of Washington School of Dentistry focuses on research-based clinical training and its students are consistently ranked among the top students in the world for research achievements and clinical competency. Beyond its clinical training and research, the school distinguishes itself from its peers by its active involvement in community health through student rotations and volunteer service. It is consistently in the upper echelon of dental schools receiving research funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the dental branch of the National Institutes of Health. In 2015, the School was ranked 21st out of 48 dental schools receiving funding.
In September 2010, the University of Washington Center for Pediatric Dentistry, which houses the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, opened in a new facility, the Washington Dental Service Building. It is located three miles away from the main campus in Seattle's Magnuson State Park. The Center is a partnership of the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital. The new Center for Pediatric Dentistry was designed together with Henry Schein.
