During the day of its glory, in the middle 20th century, the old building operated as the university's main canteen. Notable past performers include The Who (who recorded the landmark live album Live at Leeds there), Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Thin Lizzy.
On 16 February 1991 the cafeteria was the site for a performance by Leeds' home-town, Post-punk, Gothic rock, Dark wave band The Sisters of Mercy; which was recorded for the double vinyl LP the Return to Arkham.
On 17 Jun 2006 The Who again performed at the University Refectory, showing special respect for this very influential venue.
