Umxhentso, is a traditional dance of the Xhosa people. Umxhentso is performed, mostly, by Amagqirha - Traditional healers. Umxhentso has always been a pride to the Xhosa as they use this type of dancing in their celebrations.

Attire
Xhosa people wear beaded clothes when they perform umxhentso. They usually paint themselves prior to performing Umxhentso. Umxhentso is mostly performed in the Transkei where tradition is still valued.
Categories
There are different types of Umxhentso.
An ancient dance performed by old women. It is performed in ritual ceremonies. It does not require much movement and is considered as a highly dignified dance. It is slow, and accompanied by low-pitched music and clapping.
This is a dance that is performed in weddings. It is often accompanied by umbholorho, which are songs performed at weddings.
This is performed by Sangomas during their ceremonies. Ukuxhentsa also represents a dance performed by young girls during festivals and traditional ceremonies.
This is a dance performed by young boys before they depart for their initiation on the mountain. It is symbol of transition from boyhood to manhood.
