Education

Ubaya received his education from Nalanda College Colombo and was a Senior Cadet at School. A few of Ubaya's contemporaries at Nalanda are Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala, Major General Ajith Wickramasinghe,, Consultant Neurologist Udaya Ranawaka and former Sri Lanka test cricketer Sanath Kaluperuma. He is a graduate of Indian Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and University of Madras, India holding a First Division degree in Master of Science in Defence and Strategic Studies with an Instructor Grading.

Military career

He joined the army in 1981 and was commissioned on 18 July 1982 as a 2nd Lieutenant and was posted to Sri Lanka Armoured Corps. He was the commander 554 Infantry Brigade in Kilaly, Jaffna and later became Centre Commandant of the Armoured Corps.

In the year 1995, he was the commander to 1st Reconnaissance Regiment and also held the appointments of Military Assistant to the Commander of the Army and Aide-de-camp to a General Officer Commanding.

Ubaya was also Military Adviser to Sri Lanka mission to the United Nations in New York. Ubaya was Sri Lankan Army's Security Force Commander (Central & West) and former Military Spokesman.

Major General Medawala has followed overseas career military courses in India, Pakistan, Singapore, Czech Republic, China and the USA.

Medals

He is also a recipient of Rana Shura Padakkama, Vishishta Seva Vibhushana, Utthama Seva Padakkama, Distinguished Long Service Medal, Purna Bhumi Padakkama and Riviresa Campaign Services Medal.
