History

The school was named in honor of Buchanan, who purchased the largest number of shares in a corporation established to build a college in Troy in 1893. The college property was later sold to the Troy Village School District in 1929, under the provision that the name "Buchanan" remain. Hence, "Buchanan College" became "Buchanan High School" until 1997, when a new campus was built for the high school. At that time, the name was changed to Troy Buchanan High School.

Current school information

Troy Buchanan High School has a 9-12 grade enrollment of 1,900 students.

William B. Ittner Architects won an award for the design of TBHS.

In 2006, New Horizons High School (NHHS) was created, providing opportunities for select at-risk students. New Horizons is located in the old "Eagle's Nest" building behind the Troy Middle School. Beginning in 2012, NHHS began operating AM and PM sessions, serving approximately 80 students.

Beginning in 2008, 9th Grade students were housed in the Ninth Grade Center (NGC) facility in Moscow Mills, leaving TBHS with a 10-12 grade pattern. This grade pattern will continue for the near future, with eventual plans to expand the 9th grade facility into a second high school when enrollment dictates.

In 2011, enrollment created a need for the Ninth Grade Center to grow, but funding prevented expansion. The Troy R-III school district looked for a 0.75% operating levy tax increase to potentially help with this and other projects.

TBHS has partnerships that provide dual-credit opportunities at Moscow Mills sites for Missouri Baptist University and Lindenwood University. Both institutions have staff instructors teaching TBHS students. TBHS is also in partnership with Pike-Lincoln Technical Center in Eolia, Missouri with students attending courses in AM and PM shifts. Beginning in 2012-13, TBHS will expand college credit opportunities for students through Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Science, Math and Art.

TBHS is on a modified 8-block schedule that contains an Academic Lab block meeting daily and providing a time for students to receive extra help in courses.

TBHS has a student:teacher ratio of 20:1, which is higher than the MO average of 13:1.

TBHS has a graduation rate of 93% which is higher than the MO average of 86%.

FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, and TSA organizations offer students curricular opportunities, competitive events and leadership opportunities.
