History

There is no record of the foundation of the shrine. It was mentioned in the Kojiki and the Nihonshoki. Ajisukitakahikone no mikoto (味鋤高彦根命) and Hitokotonushi no kami (一言主神) are enshrined.

Tosa shrine was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) for the former Tosa province.

From 1871 through 1946, Tosa was officially designated one of the Kokuhei Chūsha (国幣中社), meaning that it stood in the mid-range of ranked, nationally significant shrines.
