Headington's father was a geologist. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. He also received graduate degrees in theology and psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California and completed his residency at the University of Southern California.

Headington is president and sole shareholder of Headington Resources, Inc., a Dallas-headquartered company, concentrated primarily in oil and natural gas, real estate/hotel development, film production, private equity and entertainment. Headington is an active philanthropist, personally and through various family foundations.

Inspired by his geologist father, Headington founded Headington Oil in 1978. He stayed under the radar until 2008 when he sold acreage in North Dakota's Bakken oil play to XTO Energy for $1.85 billion.

As a film Producer and Executive Producer, Headington has worked on numerous projects most recently World War Z (EP credit) and Hugo (producer), which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning five as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture - Drama.

He produced Angelina Jolie’s feature directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” which was Golden Globe nominated for Best Foreign Language Film; as well as the recipient of the Stanley Kramer Award and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Foreign Motion Picture in 2012. Headington also served as an executive producer on Gore Verbinksi’s “Rango,” featuring the voice of Depp, which won an Oscar® and a BAFTA Award for Best Animated Feature, as well as numerous critics awards. Other productions include the action thriller “The Tourist,” starring Depp and Jolie, which garnered three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. “The Rum Diary,” starring Johnny Depp which was produced with Depp’s company, infinitum nihil. “Edge of Darkness,” starring Mel Gibson, the three-time Academy Award®-nominated romantic drama “The Young Victoria,” and the TV produced miniseries “Camelot”.

Headington owns two hotels in Dallas, Lumen and Joule.

Headington is intimately involved in two charities. He serves as Chairman of the Board for Art of Elysium, which uses art as a catalyst for social change and Headington Institute located in Pasadena, CA, as co-founder, which offers care for caregivers worldwide by providing resilience support.
