The Heart Of Things is a jazz/rock album released in 1997 by John McLaughlin on Verve, catalogue number 539 153-2. As may be surmised from the personnel list, the genre is very much brawny electric jazz fusion featuring some young newcomers to McLaughlin's orbit as well as the familiar Beard and Chambers. All the pieces were written by McLaughlin.

The album was produced by John McLaughlin. The executive producers were Jean-Philippe Aliard and Daniel Richard. Production coordination was by Christian Pégand assisted by Karen Strugg. It was recorded and mixed at the studio Officine Mechaniche in Milan, Italy, with engineering by Paolo Iafelice and Celeste Frigo, assisted by Maurizio Andiloro. Editing was carried out at the Massimo Spinosa Studios in Milan by Massimo Spinosa, assisted by Max Costa. The mixing engineers were Max Costa and Celeste Frigo.
