History

Dorcan Comprehensive School was built in the 1970s, later becoming Dorcan Technology College. The ethos of the school is to allow access to a broad curriculum which covers both academic and work-related learning giving students the choice of which path their education should follow. Most students opt to combine the two leaving their options open for further education.

Extra-curricular activities

After school clubs are organised by staff at the beginning of each term.

  • Team practice in a wide range of sports
  • Drama productions, instrumental, performing and vocal activities
  • Use of the art rooms and school computers during breaks and after school
  • STEM club (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
  • Media, history, geography, business, ICT and modern languages clubs
  • Breakfast club — 8.00 to 8.40 am
  • Access to staff in the Learning Centre for support with homework — 3.00 to 5.00pm
  • Theatre trips, adventure holidays in Gloucestershire, residential trips abroad to France, Germany, Poland, Russia, and the United States, Worldwide Expedition to Kenya
  • Duke of Edinburgh Awards
  • Ofsted and academic performance

In March 2009, the school became a Foundation School. Since 2005, the percentage of pupils achieving five GCSEs at grades A*-C has steadily improved. Following the disappointment of the 2007 inspection, reports have followed a similar pattern of steady overall improvement, with the school gaining an overall rating of "satisfactory" in 2011.
