Le diable probablement the devil probably robert bresson trailer 1977

The film journeys back to explore the lead-up to Charles (Antoine Monnier) death after his body is found in a cemetery, shot in the head. Increasingly frustrated by life and the world around him, Charles finds no respite in the work of his environmental activist friend, Michel, shown through mini-documentaries. He sleeps with Michels girlfriend, Alberte, finding a similar void. Religion and psychoanalysis fail to repair Charles nihilist outlook, and he hires a gunman to end his life.

The Devil Probably movie scenes

The Devil Probably (French: ) is a 1977 French drama film by director Robert Bresson. It was entered into the 27th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize.

German film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder was on that particular jury, and championed Bressons film:

"Robert Bressons Le Diable probablement . . . is the most shattering film Ive seen this Berlin Festival. I think its a major film [...]. [I]n the future-and this world will probably last for another few thousand years-this film will be more important than all the rubbish which is now considered important but which never really goes deep enough[.] The questions Bresson asks will never be unimportant."

The critic J. Hoberman aptly describes the movie with one sentence: "A Dostoyevskian story of a tormented soul, presented in the stylized manner of a medieval illumination."

Charles drifts through politics, religion and psychoanalysis, rejecting them all. Once he realises the depth of his disgust with the moral and physical decline of the society he lives in, he decides that suicide is the only option...
