History

The school was founded in 1988. It became a not-for-profit organization in 2001.

Programs

Tesseract School aims to encourage independent thinking by its students. Tesseract inspires each child to realize their individual potential. They offer all the resources to cater to each child’s passion, be it academic excellence, performing arts, music, visual art, math, science, humanities, languages, service learning, etc. Whatever their passion they will embrace it and provide them with the skills, values, attitudes and knowledge to develop a love of learning and be fulfilled and successful in life. By providing a warm, collaborative, accepting, safe and respectful community, they provide each student with the environment to thrive and develop into a confident, self-assured individual. Tesseract offers the opportunity for students to embrace learning through hands-on thematic project based learning. They teach students to understand and synthesize information through critical thinking and analysis and then present on their findings instead of learning by rote and regurgitating to a test. They help their students find their own paths of passion and use many different teaching methodologies in order to do this. They believe that each child is unique and learns in a unique way, but by bringing these unique individuals together and guiding them to work collaboratively they teach them vital skills that will sustain them for lifelong success. Children who attend Tesseract School are exposed to a variety of programs, including music, art studio, drama, chorus, band, robotics, technical theater, writing skills/writer's worskshop, library and physical education. Spanish is taught to every student starting with the school's early childhood development program.

Tessaract School closed its high school in 2015 due to financial mismanagement by an inexperienced Board and Head of School. Selling of the Shea high school and DoubleTree lower school properties was necessary to keep the school solvent and pay its bills. Enrollment continued to dramatically decline and criticism of the inexperienced Board about poor decisions, a lackluster academic program and mismanagement plagues the school. The Head of School was again replaced in Spring 2016.

Tesseract School is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). It is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Arizona Association of Independent Schools (AAIS).
