Sushma K Rao (Kannada: ಸುಷ್ಮಾ ಕೆ ರಾವ್;) is an Indian Television Actress, born in Koppa (Chikmagalur district), Karnataka, India. She is also a professional Bharatanatyam dancer. She has regularly performed all over India in the Bharatanjali group of Nrityakalamandiram, Bengaluru.

Most famous as a television soap actress for her role Bhavana in Guptagamini, Sushma K Rao is also a renowned television presenter. With her debut in S. Narayan's film Bhageerathi, she is most famous in the Kannada film industry.

  • After her fame in Genes, she was invited to host another game show named Mane Mane Mahalakshmi, which will be aired on a leading Kannada general entertainment channel.
  • She was offered the lead role in a Kannada movie named “Excuse Me”, but she refused the offer as she was not comfortable wearing western clothes.
  • One of the reasons for her divorce from Preetham Gubbi is that she cut back on her work after her marriage.
  • Genes went off-air during the nationwide lockdown due to the pandemic.

Early Life

Sushma K Rao was born in the remote town of Koppa, in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. Very little is known about her family, but she does have a younger brother. In 2007 Sushma married Preetham Gubbi, an Indian screenplay writer and director. After staying together for 6 years, the couple decided to get a divorce in 2013 on the grounds of unresolved misunderstandings.

Growing up she was interested in the world of glamour, but she focused on her studies first. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Karnataka Lingayat Education Society (KLE College). She also holds another bachelor's degree in the Hindi language from the University of Madras.

Pursuing her passion for dancing and the world of glamour, she performed as a trained Bharatnatyam dancer at many events throughout India in the states of Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram and even in the Hampi Utsav, one of the largest celebrations in Karnataka.

Professional Life

It was Vijay Kashi, a renowned face in the Kannada film industry, who introduced Shushma Rao to her television career. Before she had her debut on TV, she was training in Kuchipudi under Vyjayanthi Kashi, Vijay’s wife.

Her television debut began with S. Narayan's soap opera Bhageerathi, where she played the role of Veena.

Major directors noticed her after her first appearance and thereafter she starred in many films and series such as Swathi Muttu as Pallavi, Guptagamini as Bhavana, Bidige Chandrama as Shashikala and Sose Thanda Sowbhagya as Keerthi.

After multiple roles in the Kannada film industry, she ventured into the Hindi television industry. In 2020, Shushma Rao was the anchor for the famous game show Genes that invited television actors as participants.

  • Her talent got her a lot of recognition throughout the country. She was the recipient of numerous State and Central scholarships in dance. 
  • In 1997, she won the Aryabhata award for her outstanding contribution to the world of Bharatanatyam.

  • She won the Best Actress award in Karnataka Television Association Award (KTAA) for her performance in Guptagamini.
