Prasad was first elected to 15th Bihar Assembly after defeating Gita Pandey, the wife of the previous incumbent Sunil Pandey, by a narrow margin of 296 votes in the 2015 Bihar elections.He is one of three CPI(ML-L) MLAs who won seats in the election.
Prasad is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation party's state committee.
