Subway Surfers is an "endless running" mobile game co-developed by Kiloo, a private company based in Denmark and SYBO Games. It is available on Android, iOS, Kindle, and Windows Phone platforms. Players of the game take the role of teenage hooligans who, upon being caught in the act of applying graffiti to (tagging) a metro railway site, run down the tracks to escape the Inspector and his dog. As the hooligans run, they grab gold coins out of the air while simultaneously dodging collisions with railway cars and other objects, and can also get on top of the trains as well to evade capture. Special objects, such as the Weekly Hunt, can result an award in the game.
Subway Surfers was released on 24 May 2012 with updates based on seasonal holidays. Since 2 January 2013, updates have been based on a "Tour Theme" which places the game in a new editions every month. The Windows Phone 8 version was discontinued in March 2016, due to the development and the release of the Windows 10 Mobile version a few months later. The latest update for Windows Phone 8 is the Subway Surfers World Tour: Barcelona (2017).
Subway Surfers contains several power-ups to enhance gameplay.
Spray can jetpacks allow the player to fly above the track and continuously collect coins for a few seconds.Super sneakers allow the player to jump higher and further, which is useful for dodging obstacles such as trains and buffer stops.Coin magnets make the coins in the course move towards the player.Score doublers temporarily double the player's score multiplier, resulting in a higher overall score.Hoverboards protect the player from crashing by clearing the scene if there is a collision. Lasts 30 seconds.Score boosters, activated at the beginning of a game, increase the player's score multiplier by 5 throughout the game.Head starts, activated at the beginning of a game, allow the player to start the game at a higher initial speed with Spray can jetpacks.Jake is the default Subway Surfers character and the mascot of Kiloo, who appears in game icons. All other characters must be "unlocked", which is done in one of two ways. Some characters are unlocked via the collection of character attributes in the course of the game. An attribute may be an article of clothing (such as a hat) or a prop (such as a stereo). Other characters are available by spending coins in-game.
The Inspector and his Dog chase the characters. While they are always the same character, his uniform changes according to the location. During the New Orleans edition, the Inspector was replaced by Frankenstein with a skeleton dog. During the second London, North Pole and Winter Holiday editions, he was dressed as Santa Claus. During the second Rome edition and third Paris edition, he was dressed as the Easter Bunny. During the Prague edition, he was dressed as the Knight.
Subway Surfers received pretty mixed reviews. Critics praised the game's visual style, intuitive controls and fun gameplay but criticized it for monotonous world and unresponsive controls in. According to them gamers can play Subway Surfers for 3–4 hours and then will be nothing to play again for. Aggregating review websites GameRankings and Metacritic gave the game 71% based on 8 reviews and 72/100 based on 6 reviews.
Dan Griliopoulos of Pocket Gamer gave the game a score of 5 out of 10, praising the game's fun gameplay and free access, but criticizing the game's controls and parsimonious game design.
Gamezebo’s Dant Rambo scored the game 3.5 out of 5, writing "It makes little attempt to stand out from other endless runners, but it’s hard not to appreciate the polish of Subway Surfers. The controls are responsive, the gameplay is addictive, and it doesn’t try and force you into spending cash on in-game items.”
Other reviewers were not so critical to the Subway Surfers. 148Apps and TouchArcade gave the game 4/5. Reviewers from The Apps Depot and Apple’n’Apps were impressed, scoring the game 4.5 out of 5.
Real players was more supportive to the Subway Surfers. Users of Google Play and iTunes gave the game 4.5 out of 5.
