History
Special Olympics is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become fit, productive and respected members of the society through sports training and competition. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition to 2.5 million adults and children with intellectual disabilities across 180 countries. The Special Olympics Movement offers one of the world's greatest platforms for acceptance and inclusion for all people, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or cultural difference.
Mission
The mission of Special Olympics Pakistan is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and community.
Goal
The goal of Special Olympics is to give people suffering from an intellectual disbility the opportunity to develop their skills and capabilities through sports training and ultimately to bring them into mainstream society.
