The series is set in Jin, a ducal state under the Zhou dynasty, during the Spring and Autumn period. The story starts with Jie Zitui as a central character and gradually develops until the events of the Li Ji Rebellion. Chong'er, a son of Duke Xian of Jin, is forced to go into exile for 19 years due to the political disturbance. After enduring numerous hardships, Chong'er eventually regains control of his state with help from Duke Mu of Qin, and becomes historically known as "Duke Wen of Jin". Apart from striving to bring prosperity to Jin, Duke Wen also assists King Xiang of Zhou in overcoming the traitorous Prince Dai and reclaiming the throne, and wins a decisive victory in the Battle of Chengpu against the Chu state.
