Somandargudi is a village in Villupuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

This small village is located on the north bank of the river Gomuki, It is 6 km away from Kallakurichi,in Sankarapuram Taluk, Villupuram District.

As per 2001 India census, Somandargudi had a population of 2,742. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Most of the villagers are farmers.

There is an elementary school, built by the villagers and inaugurated by Shri K. Kamaraj, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Since 1969 there has also been a Government high school, inaugurated by Shri C.N.ANNADURAI. Thiru GNANAVALLAL AMMAVASIYAPPILLAI is one of the Freedom fighter born in this village.

The village has been visited by many ministers and politician leaders including Thanthai Periyar and V.R. Neduncheziyan.

Mr S.P. Pachaiappan was one of the MLAs in 1967-1971 during C.N.ANNADURAI period. Mr S. Kaletheerthan also become as MLA (1980-1984 & 1984-1989) during Shri M.G.R. period. His son Thiru Dr.KAMARAJ is member of loksabha since May 2014.

Places of worship

There are many temples in Somandargudi. These include the ancient and popular Somanatheswara Temple (Tamil: ஞீ சோமநாதீஸ்வரர் திருக்கோவில்). This temple was built by Parantaka Chola at the end of the 10th century. In Hinduism, Chandra (சந்திரன்) is a lunar deity and a Graha. The Chandra is also identified as Soma (சோமன்). The Chandra prayed to the God Shiva in this temple, to get rid of his curse. So, the God in this temple got the name of Somanatheswara (Soma+Eswara).
