The school was founded in 1968 by Gopalkrishna Singhania and named after his wife. The school started operating in 1969 and has expanded from 400 students then to 6500 now, under principals Dr S.R.N. Rao, Dr M.D. Jani, Dr Vijayam Ravi and Mrs Revathi Srinivasan (current).
The school is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), which conducts its Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) examinations for Class 10 and Indian School Certificate (ISC) examinations for Class 11 and 12.
Infrastructure
The school campus has an area of about 12.8 acres and a total built up area of 3.75 sq. ft. The school has 12 auditoriums in all plus 1 open air theatre called 'Gopalvan'. The total seating capacity of the auditoriums is approximately 800 to 1000 each. Gopalvan has an accommodation capacity of about 2200. The school consists 3 large libraries, 7 computer laboratories, 6 science laboratories, 1 Math laboratory, 8 A.V laboratories and 1 carpentry laboratory. The school comprises 146 classrooms with an addition of 19 utility rooms for Art, Craft, Music, Technical drawing, Home Science etc. The campus has 5 play grounds in all.
School Library
The school has 3 libraries and more than 80,000 books, periodicals, audio visuals and CDs. The library in the Senior section has an area of about 4000 sq ft. The research rooms offer free internet access for students.
A new library system 'Libsys' is installed and covers all the functions of the library. OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) helps the members to search its bibliographic database.
Computer Laboratories
The school has computer labs, each with 45 computers.
Science Laboratories
The school has 6 science laboratories.
Health Care Centre
The school Health Care Centre has trained medical staff and emergency beds. It also organizes health education activities.
School Canteen
The Canteen offers food throughout the year.
Sports facilities
The school follows a House system - Vindhya, Himachal, Yamuna and Ganga. Each student is a member of a House and has to stay back after school hours on pre-planned days. The best all rounder sports person of each year is awarded with the Governor’s Cup which is 600 grams of silver each. Sports scholarships are available. All expenses for the matches are borne by the School. The School Management invites foreign coaches for specialized training programs. Mike Powel, Jonty Rhodes, Gary Kirsten, Irfan Patthan , Ajinkya Rahane , Lalchand Rajput , NBA , Gary from Arsenal Soccer are some of them. Recently badminton player Jwala Gutta inaugurated the indoor sports facility in school. Mass –Drill – Displays which sees the participation of the whole school. 6500 students performing displays at one time. The school has 5 grounds and a mini stadium ground. Swimming pools, tennis courts, badminton courts and 2 large grounds are also available for the use of the students.
The school provides gym equipment for physical fitness, sport equipment and facilities. Bowling machines, equipment for gymnastics-double vault, 3 Basketball courts, Football courts, 10,000 sq. ft. space for skating.
To be physically active, the school begins sports in KG itself, thus make it an organized way of keeping fit. Students are permitted to stay back until 5 pm with prior written permission of parents and sports dept for free play. The school hosts District level basketball, volley ball and football matches (DSO) thus opening our doors for other schools to use our grounds.
The school has hosted the Maharashtra state Championship for all ICSE and ISC Schools, providing all facilities to the 68 teams that comes from across the state for the basket ball tournament.
Physical Education as a subject is offered to students under group III for the ICSE Board examination. The School celebrates The National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
Aesthetic
The ground floor of the newest wing of Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School, Thane, houses an aquarium with 15 tanks and 25 species of fish including piranhas. There is also a Marine fish tank and an open pond.
Awards and Scholarships
1. The Governor's Cup Instituted by the Board of Governors. Awarded to the two best sports persons (one each from the Senior and Junior sections) for all round performance in indoor games, outdoor games and athletic events.
2. Gopalkrishna Singhania Gold Medal Instituted by the Trustees. Awarded every year to the outstanding student of Std. 10.
3. Lala Kailaspat Singhania Gold Medal Instituted by the Trustees. Awarded every year to the top scorer in the ISC examinations.
4. Lala Kailaspat Singhania Merit Scholarship is open to students from Std. I to XII.
5. Major Gen. Vohra Trophy is awarded to the House that scores the highest aggregate in all competitions that are literary and cultural in nature (Classes I to XII).

7. Thane Police Commissioner - Shri. D. Sivanandan's Rolling Trophy for Academic Excellence is awarded to the student who secures the maximum aggregate in academics in Std. 8, 9 and 10.
Instituted by the Trustees. Awarded every year to the top scorer in the ISC examinations.
Events
The school holds various events throughout the year for all classes such as Republic Day, Independence Day, Open House, Sports Day, Annual Day, Parents Day, Guru Poornima, Investiture Ceremony, Honour Society Function (Function held to felicitate students scoring well in academics as well as cultural activities), Lamp lighting ceremony and Farewell (for std 10).
Achievements
2016 ICSE Results School average : 91% 492 students took the examinations and 67% of them scored 90% or over.
