Skylar Satenstein (born June 23, 1971) is an American physician and cosmetic surgeon. She holds degrees from Harvard and Columbia University, and was once married to Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich.

Life and career

She is the daughter of Celia (née Onkels) and Frank Satenstein (1924-1984), a television director and producer. She has a sister, Sloan Satenstein Klein, and a brother, Louis. Her father worked for CBS Television and was known for directing many episodes of The Honeymooners. Her parents divorced and her mother married James Hogan, a lawyer. Her grandfather, Louis Satenstein, was a Jewish immigrant that came to Manhattan and founded the American Book Bindery and Stratford Press.

She is divorced from Danish musician Lars Ulrich, one of the founders of the rock band Metallica, whom she married in 1997. They have two children together, Myles b. 1998, and Layne b. 2001. They divorced in 2004.

Dr. Skylar Ulrich currently is a licensed plastic surgeon and operates out of Corte Madera, California. She primarily works with laser treatments. After years of working in hospitals in internal medicine, in 2009 she switched her focus to cosmetic enhancement. She graduated from Ransom Everglades School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in cellular and molecular biology from Harvard University. She trained at Columbia University. She holds a master's degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley.

Her former boyfriend, actor Matt Damon, wrote her into his Academy Award-winning screenplay for the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. British actress Minnie Driver was cast and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a fictionalized version of Skylar. The film depicts her time studying medicine at Harvard while she was dating Damon. She is credited in the film with a 'Thank You' for allowing her name and persona to be used.

She appeared in the 2004 Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster. She has also appeared on shows like The Howard Stern Show and E! True Hollywood Story.


Professional Career

Skylar has earned several degrees relating to science and medicine throughout her impressive educational career.

After officially becoming a Doctor of Medicine, Skylar continued to pursue even more advanced medical qualifications. In 2002, she earned a Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of California, Berkeley. In 2003, Skylar completed her course in Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, earning a specialization in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

Over her tenure of two years at the University of California, San Francisco, she served as a resident in the Bioterrorism Unit of the Communicable Disease Department. Her focus was on planning for smallpox vaccination after potential bioterrorism events. This role provided her with the expertise and insights necessary to author her thesis, “The Complications of Smallpox Vaccination.”

Skylar was a medical physician for most of her early career. From 2000 to 2014, she worked as an Emergency Room Physician and a General Physician for several hospitals. However, in 2012, she transitioned into cosmetic surgery and opened her own private practice in Corte Madera, California called Skylar Ulrich Aesthetic and Laser Medicine.
