Sipra Bose studied music under the renowned Bengali vocalist Chinmoy Lahiri. He was famous for his Khayal form of singing and his renditions of Ragpradhan songs in Bengali, the latter of which greatly influenced Bose’s own music. Under his mentorship, Bose learned the art of the raga, which she applied to her musical skills as a vocalist and instrumentalist.

Among the other genres of Indian classical music she learned from Chinmoy Lahiri was thumri. During one particular thumri performance, she was noticed by a famous Ghazal vocalist, Begum Akhtar, also known as Maliika-e-Ghazal or “Queen of Ghazals.”

After that momentous event, Sipra Bose moved to Faizabad to continue her musical studies under Begum Akhtar. There, she expanded her knowledge of classical Indian music even further into the traditions of ghazal, dadra, chaiti, jhula, and kajri.

Sipra Bose continued her mentorship until Begum Akhtar died in 1974. She pursued further musical studies under Naina Devi, a vocalist renowned for her mastery of thumri, dadra, and ghazal. She also studied under the world-famous sitarist Ravi Shankar, who is best known in the West as the musician who introduced the Indian classical genre to The Beatles.
