SimManager is a Simulation Process and Data Management (SPDM) system that manages multiple aspects of CAE simulation and test data and is developed by MSC Software Corporation with headquarters in Newport Beach, California, USA. SimManager provides a web-based system to gain a better handle on the volume and complexity of the simulation data generated for and by Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics and other computationally intensive methods. It can also interact with other enterprise services such as queuing systems, High Performance Computing (HPC), Product Data Management (PDM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Authentication services (e.g. LDAP, Active Directory).

History

SimManager originated from a development project Virtual Insight (also known as CAE-Bench) by Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI). The Virtual Insight program started in 1998 followed by the first production version of Virtual Insight was installed at BMW in 2000 and was targeted to manage simulation for the Crash and Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) disciplines. In 2001, Virtual Insight was acquired by MSC Software. In 2003, the next major installation of Virtual Insight was installed at Audi. First commercial version of SimManager was available in 2004.

In 2006, SimManager Enterprise was released with a more comprehensive framework allowing inclusion of simulation business logic and standardization of HPC integration techniques.

In 2012, SimManager’s 4th generation product which was developed in conjunction with BMW was released. It provided more standard CAE patterns for integration for Import, Export, PreProcessing, Assembly, Solving, Post Processing and Reporting. Additionally, deployment was simplified with a standard installation program, strong interface to Authentication and Authorization and Direct HPC Queue integration.

Capabilities

Capabilities of SimManager include:

  • Capture of local data in a central searchable environment
  • Authoring and management of repeatable simulation work activities
  • Assembly of models and load cases from one to thousands of simulations
  • Launching simulations in a High Performance Computing (HPC) environment
  • Sorting through data to get design insights
  • Report creation and comparison of virtual-to-virtual or virtual-to-physical test results
  • Traceability of simulation pedigree from model to report
