Sikhwala is a village of Malout tehsil of district Sri Mukatsar Sahib, Punjab, India.

It is located in the southern part of district Mukatsar. The state capital Chandigarh is 280 km and national capital New Delhi is 346 km from Sikhwala. It is located on Lambi-Sangariya road and Lambi Khubban road Malout near about 27 km and Mandi Dabwali 25 km from village Sikhwala.

Geography and Climate

The soil of Sikhwala is fertile. the canal 'Lambi Distributory' runs in the west of the village. It is between Sikhwala and Fatuhikhera village. There are 6 ponds (Chhapar in Punjabi) in the village.

History

Sikhs were always in majority. Families of Ramgarhia clan began to live here.

Baba Kharak Singh has important place in the history of this village. Saint Anant prakash used to live in a dera. He belonged to the Udasin tradition of saints. He had a simple living. He was a revered man among the people. In the Dera Shri Gurugranth Sahib is read with traditional devotion.

Governance

Sikhwala has a grampanchayat status. Mr. Singh is Sarpanch of village.

Culture

Sikhism is practiced by majority of population. Ramgarhia people are in majority. Rajpal, Matharu, Lote, Kalsi, Bamrah, Chana are main gotras of these Ramgarhia people in Sikhwala. Jattsikh, Arora, Bania, Ravidasia, Mazhabi are other castes here. Punjabi is the main language. People wear Kurta, Payjama, Chaadara, Pent and Shirts. Women wear Punjabi suits. Some changes in the culture has been seen in last decades. Women have almost left spinning on Charkha. Tiyaan is not held now.

Homes are equipped with modern electronic appliances. Dth and FM radio has changed mode of entertainment. Kothis or English bungalows are taking place of old havelis. Bagri language, a dialect of Rajasthani language, is also spoken by some people mainly living in middle of village.

Hinduism is also practiced by some population. In the eastern part of Sikhwala there is converted Christians as minority.

School and Colleges

Government Sec. Govt. senior secondary school and Govt. elementary school fulfills education requirements. An English school is run by Christian missionaries. Harsh public school. A university college has been established on Sikhwala-Bhitiwala road.

Sports

Cricket, Kabbadi and Volleyball are very popular sports here.

Nearest Railway Station

Malout and Mandi Dabwali are nearest (both about 27–22 km) cities and railway station from here.
