Early Films

It wasn’t until 2011 that Shine took on a more significant role in Gaddama, a survival-drama film directed by Kamal. Shine played a migrant worker in Saudi Arabia who is enslaved and tortured. He went on to act in other films like Annayum Rasoolum and Ee Adutha Kaalathu. However, these were mostly minor or supporting roles.
In 2014, Shine landed his breakthrough leading role in the fantasy comedy film, Binu Sadanandan’s Ithihasa. Shine took on the role of Alvy, a carefree young pickpocketer, whose body gets swapped with a young software engineer, played by famed actress Anusree.
Ithihasa received highly positive reviews from critics and became Malayalam cinemas’ highest-grossing film in 2014. From then on, Shine started playing more significant roles in the films Tiyaan, Godha, Parava, Varnyathil Aashanka, and Mayanadhi.
In 2019, Shine was cast as the main antagonist of the romantic thriller Ishq. The film was mostly met with negative reviews from viewers and critics. However, Shine’s portrayal of Alwin was highly praised for his convincingly villainous performance. His portrayal won him the 9th South Indian International Movie award (SIIMA) for Best Performance by an Actor in a Negative Role.
In 2021, Shine starred in a biographical crime thriller film titled Kurup. The film is based on the notorious Keralan fugitive Sukumara Kurup who was played by famed actor Dulquer Salmaan. Shine played Kurup’s accomplice, Bhasi Pillai.
Despite playing a supporting role, Shine was lauded by critics and media as the highlight performance of the film. His role earned him a nomination for the 10th SIIMA award for Best Actor in a Negative Role.
In April 2022, Shine made his debut in Tamil cinema in Beast, directed by Nelson Dilip Kumar. It has since been met with mixed reviews among audiences and critics.
In October 2022, Shine starred in Vichitram, a Malayalam crime mystery thriller directed by Achu Vijayan.
Controversies
Arrest Over Drug Possession
In early 2015, Shine was arrested in Kochi over suspicion of drug possession, along with assistant director Blessy and models Reshma, Tinsy Babu, and Sneha Babu. According to news reports, the police found nearly 10 grams of cocaine at a party they were hosting in an apartment in Kadavanthra.
After two months in judicial custody, Shine was released from Ernakulam Sub Jail on bail. Shine denied all accusations. He maintained that he had not used the cocaine nor did he have anything to do with the possession. He also said that he wasn’t sure whether he was being framed by someone.
Alleged Involvement In An Assault
In March 2022, there were allegations that Shine was involved in a fight during the filming of Thallumaala. According to the locals, the film crew had been allegedly dumping waste on public roads and illegally parking, causing traffic jams.
The tension escalated into a fight between the locals and the film crew, which involved Shine as well as actor Tovino Thomas. Police were called to the film location to help de-escalate the situation.
The details of the fight, which group started it, and how it escalated are unclear. However, following the incident, no one from either the locals or the film crew lodged any legal complaints.
Criticism Of Beast
In June 2022, Shine made controversial comments regarding his first Tamil film Beast. Shine was asked in an interview whether he considered the film a good introduction to Tamil cinema. Sarcastically, he replied, “Beast film itself is not a good entry to Tamil cinema.” His comment was met with outrage online by fans of Vijay who played the protagonist in the film.
A month after Shine made the comment, he issued an apology via Twitter. In the tweet, Shine said, “Am really sorry for what I spoke through media…It’s my own mistake…sry nanban.” He went on to say that “bcoz wn v speak bad ABT anything or anybody it really hurts a lot to those who like tht thing or to those who love that person.”
Controversial Remarks About Women In Film
In November 2022, Shine sparked controversy by making comments regarding women who work in cinema. During an interview to promote his latest movie Vichitram, Shine expressed that having more women directors would pose trouble for the industry.
He explained that “women always prefer to have male friends over female companions” and that “a surge in the presence of women only helps to escalate problems.”
