Sean Tracey

College

Tracey played both football and baseball in his first year at Citrus College in Glendora, California. In baseball, he earned All-American honors his second baseball season at Citrus. In football, Sean was a backup quarterback to his brother Ryan at Citrus in 1999.

Sean played collegiate summer baseball for the Santa Barbara Foresters in 2000 and 2001. In 2000 Sean traveled with the Santa Barbara Foresters as a bullpen catcher and participated in the annual summer classic Midnight Sun Game, in Fairbanks, Alaska. This game was uniquely coined "The Turn of the Century Midnight Sun Game”. In 2002, his third year of college, he played for the UC Irvine Anteaters.

Minor leagues

Tracey was selected by Chicago White Sox in the 8th round (240th overall) of 2002 Major League Baseball draft. He made his professional debut that season in rookie ball with the Bristol White Sox of the Appalachian League. Over the next four seasons, he worked his way up through the White Sox organization, reaching triple-A in 2006 with the Charlotte Knights.

Major league debut

Tracey made his Major League Baseball debut with the White Sox on June 8, 2006, against the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. In his debut, Tracey pitched two innings and surrendered 1 hit and no runs while striking out two. He appeared in seven games for Chicago, all in relief.

Tracey was involved in a controversial situation on June 14, 2006. With the White Sox down by 8 runs, manager Ozzie Guillén brought in Tracey to face Texas Rangers third baseman Hank Blalock in retaliation for White Sox catcher A. J. Pierzynski being hit by pitches in his first two at-bats, which the second hit by pitch was an off speed pitch. After attempting to hit Blalock and missing, Guillen removed Tracey from the game, despite Tracey retiring Blalock. Guillen verbally berated Tracey in the dugout. After the game Guillen told his side of the story to the media about his actions during the game. Tracey responded to the media with "No comment" and was demoted to the White Sox Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights, the next day because the White Sox had already acquired another pitcher in an unrelated trade, however the new acquisition was represented by his same sports management group.

Miscellaneous

On March 23, 2007, Sean was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles and spent the entire season in the minors battling an injury sustained in 2006. After missing the entire 2008 season due to surgery, he became a free agent.

In February 2009, Tracey signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He went down in a spring training game with an injury related to the 2008 surgery, and was released in June of 2009 having never pitched in a regular-season game in the Angels organization.

In July 2009, still injured, Tracey appeared in one game for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, pitching just one-third of an inning, striking out one, giving up six runs on five walks and one hit batsman. In 2010, Tracey had surgery for his 2009 injury. He resumed pitching with the Laredo Lemurs of the American Association in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

In sum total of experiences Sean earned pitcher of the week 3 different times in his career, 2004, 2006, 2014 and made a minor league all star appearance in 2005. In a total of a 14-year window he has competed in 12 seasons and completed 7.

Sean has participated in playoffs 4 times, 3 of which were consecutive from class High A to Triple A, losing to the eventual Champion each year. Sean has contributed to 3 Championships early, middle, and late in his career. As a member of the Arizonal Fall League Peoria Saguaro club in 2005 he was a World Series reserve as an active 40 man roster spot holder for the American League Champions Chicago White Sox. Sean played Internationally 3 times as a professional in Venezuela, Mexico, and Australia. Throughout his 12-season career he was an assistant Freshman coach for 3 seasons of combined football and baseball at Upland High school. Sean was a recruiter and the Pitching Coach for Claremont Mudd Scripps College in 2012-2014. During the summer of 2013 he was the player pitching coach for the Santa Barbara Foresters that took the 2013 CCL North Division Championship, and a 4th-place finish in the 2013 NBC World Series.
