Neighbourhood

Sagar Pur is strategically located and very well connected to other colonies of New Delhi such as Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Dabri, New Delhi, Dwarka Sub City, Delhi Cantonment as well as the Indira Gandhi International Airport & Gurgaon (via Dwarka Sub City).

Planning and location

Sagarpur is divided into smaller regions: East Sagarpur, West Sagarpur, Main Sagarpur, Indirapark Palam Colony, Vashist Park, Durga Park, and has blocks ranging from A to M, with street numbers assigned in each block. The area is a "concrete jungle" with concrete streets, small houses, proper drainage and water supply system but lacks common grounds, parks, community centers and other amenities as found in adjacent Janakpuri. Until recent years, private house ownership has now seen a shift to flat ownership due to increase in property rates of the area. Only drawback of this location is an uncovered drainage which is hindering the development of the area. Now it is covered completely.

Politics

Sagarpur was always been crucial to active politics since this colony was made three decades back. In 1993, when Delhi held its first state election for the 70 MLA seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the Indian National Congress party by grabbing 49 seats. Mr. Vinod Kumar Sharma was the first MLA who got elected from Nasirpur Constituency on BJP seat. Indian National Congress Leader Mr. Mahabal Mishra won in three consecutive elections in 1998, 2003 & 2008 from the seat, and was later also elected as the Member of Parliament of the area in Indian general election, 2009 from West Delhi. In by-elections held in 2009 Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mr. Pradyumn Rajput won the seat in 2009 by-elections by defeating Ms Tilotma Chaudhary of Congress by more than 11,000 votes, Currently this seat is occupied (as per Delhi Legislative Assembly election, 2016) by Mr. adarsh shastri from [aam aadmi party Party]] who received 42734 votes against 37537 votes received by Aam Aadmi Party leader Ravi Kumar Suryan. There are two MCD Councillor from this area (sagarpur and west sagar pur): Mr. Praveen Rajput and Mrs. Usha Gupta, both independents and serving their second term. Parvesh Verma is the current Member of Parliament from the area after being elected from West Delhi Lok Sabha Constituency in Indian general election, 2014.

People

Although it is a small colony but people from different parts of India live here. Population density mainly consist of people from Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Bihar.

This colony was unauthorized in its earlier stages, as it was made on the agricultural land of Nasirpur & Dabri villages. It is now gaining recognition as an education hub as a number of students live here as tenants studying in some of the engineering & professional colleges (affiliated to I.P. University or HRD ministry) like Hindustan College, IITM, IETE, MERI etc. in D-Block Janakpuri Institutional area.
