Roberto Burioni, MD, PhD (Pesaro, 1962) is an Italian scientist, Professor of Microbiology and Virology at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan, active in the field of research related to human monoclonal antibodies against infectious pathogens.

Education and Career

After graduating from the Liceo Classico Raffaello, Urbino, Italy, he received his Medical Degree from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Medical School in Rome and a Ph.D. in Microbiological Sciences from the University of Genoa .

He was a visiting student at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia and at the Wistar Institute of the University of Pennsylvania in Dr. Hilary Koprowski’s laboratory.

Since 1989 he was a visiting scientist at the Center for Molecular Genetics at the University of California, San Diego, and then at the Scripps Research Institute

In November 1995, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Medical School of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome, where he stayed until 1999, when he moved as Assistant Professor in Virology at the Medical School of the Università di Ancona.

In 2004 he began as an Associate Professor at the Medical School at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan, where eventually was appointed Full Professor of Microbiology and Virology.

He is active as a scientific divulgator in the vaccine field.
