History
The institute was established in 1959 with the name "NIOC bureau for development and research" (Persian: اداره توسعه و تحقیقات شرکت ملی نفت ایران). The mission of the bureau was limited to research and development in the applications of petrochemical materials.
After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the organization was renamed to "the Center for Research and Scientific Services" (Persian: مرکز پژوهش و خدمات علمی) and then in 1990 with a major rebuilding of missions, to the current name "Research Institute of Petroleum Industry". The activities were then upgraded to fundamental, applied and developmental research in oil, natural gas and petro-chemistry.
