Ratnipora

Ratnipora is a town in Kashmir, situated equally distant from three towns, Awantipora, Pulwama and Pampore. Ratnipora is known for its education and its literacy rate of 93%. Ratnipora has a very high number of graduate,post-graduate and doctorate people. It is home to the most prominent poets and educationists of the Kashmir Valley. The people mainly rely on government jobs, but agriculture is also practiced by a one third of the population. Ratnipora has been historically important for its contribution to education and poetry having produced notable people like, Syed Shamas-ud-din Andrabi Gamgeen etc.

100% population practices Islam. While there are three Jama Masjids, there are more than 30 other masjids, and a Hindu temple. Ratnipora was also inhabited by thirty Hindu ( Kashmiri Pandit) households who had to leave their homes & hearths in the year 1990 due to disturbed situation in Kashmir valley. Otherwise, before the year 1990 both Hindus & Muslims were living in quite harmony.

A stream namely Laar flows through Ratnipora, while there are four bridges connecting the two parts. To the south, there is a stream called Romush, and both Laar and Romush meet Jehlum in southern outskirts of Ratnipora. There are also a few brooklets which finally enter Jehlum. BERCY, an initiative of JKEDI has its office in Ratnipora.
