Journalism career

McTavish started her career at Channel One in her home city of Liverpool before working as a newsreader for GMTV and Five News. She also covered the Midlands for ITV national bulletins as a video journalist before taking on the role of presenter for many ITV News programmes and was a regular presenter on the ITV News Channel until its closure in 2005 - most notably during the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City. Rachel could also be heard on LBC 97.3's Nick Ferrari Show on Friday mornings.

McTavish became a freelance journalist on STV's Scotland Today, in 2007 fronting the West opt-out during the main evening programme and pan-regional short bulletins in the Central region.

On 28 April 2008, she joined STV's regional magazine programme The Five Thirty Show, replacing Debi Edward - first as a stand-in and then, permanently. McTavish went on to co-host the show until her departure from STV on 15 May 2009. The programme was axed and replaced by an hour-long programme entitled The Hour. From 2011 until November 2012 she was seen once again presenting both the ITV News at 5:30 and London Tonight for ITN. In June 2011 she returned to STV additionally as a news bulletin presenter and stand-in anchor for the West edition of STV News at Six, then became a temporary main anchor of the East edition of STV News at Six, until May 2014. Rachel now acts as relief presenter on the programme, as well as presenting STV News bulletins in the West region.

Other work

McTavish also runs her own jewellery business and website, the McTavish Collection.
