Taxonomy

Protitanotherium was named by Osborn (1929) [name suggested by Hatcher 1895; raised to genus level]. It is not extant. It was synonymized subjectively with Diplacodon by Lucas (1983). It was assigned to Brontotheriidae by Osborn (1929), Carroll (1988) and Mader (1989).

Morphology

A single specimen was examined by M. Mendoza for body mass and estimated to have a weight of 2.38 kg (5.2 lb).
