Habitat and range

The bastard cunningfish is limited to the two islands of Saint Helena and Ascension in the mid-Atlantic ridge. It is typically found on rocky reefs, between 12 and 35 metres depth, but is observable from 1 to 12 metres at Hummock Point. In the shallower waters of its range, it can be seen in caves and at the bases of overhangs.

Behaviour

Although rarely seen, Prognathodes dichrous is normally observed in pairs, but can also be found in large groups in deeper reefs.
