He is a 1977 batch IAS officer belonging to the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Prior to this appointment he served as the Power Secretary of India, and as Shipping Secretary of India before that.

Education

P.K. Sinha is an Economics graduate from St. Stephen's College, and holds a postgraduate degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics. He holds a MPhil degree as well.
Career

Apart from being the Cabinet Secretary of India. P.K. Sinha has served in various key posts in both Central and UP Government, like as Principal Secretary (Irrigation), Commissioner of Varanasi Division, Investment Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, Addl. CEO of Greater Noida, Addl. Resident Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh, the District Magistrate and Collector of districts of Agra and Jaunpur, Secretary of Uttaranchal Development Authority and as the Vice Chairman of Meerut Development Authority in the UP government, and as Union Power Secretary, Union Shipping Secretary, Special Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Union Government.
Cabinet Secretary
P.K. Sinha was appointed the Cabinet Secretary of India on May 29, 2015 by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). He succeeded Ajit Seth. He served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD), in the rank of Secretary, in the Cabinet Secretariat till Ajit's retirement, he formally took charge on June 13, 2015.
The Union Government constituted a selection committee headed by Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha for the shortlisting of candidates for RBI governorship following the end of Raghuram Rajan’s term in September 2016. Dr Urjit Patel was appointed as Governor of RBI, with effect from 04 September 2016.
On April 25, 2017, he got an extension of one year as Cabinet Secretary.
During his tenure as Cabinet Secretary, PK Sinha, has been widely regarded as one of the most powerful people in India.
