Poonguzhali is a fictional character of a Tamil historical novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy. She was the wife of Thirumavalavan chola his another Name was uthama Chola and aunt of Rajendra Chola.

Early life

Poonguzhali was born in Kodiyakarai, a territory of the Chola dynasty. Her father was a boat man and so was she. Her main occupation was to sail in the sea with her boat.

Adventures

Her adventures begin when she meets Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan. She rows with him to Eelam to meet Arulmozhi varman. Later on the way back from Eelam she rescues Arulmozhi varman and Vallavarayan Vandhiyathevan from drowning in the Indian Ocean as their ship meets with a storm.

Royal throne

Poonguzhali marries Thirumavalavan, later known as Madhurandhaka Uthama Chozha. After the assassination of Aditya Karikalan or 'Aditya II, people want Arulmozhi varman to be king. But Arulmozhi varman points to Uththama Chola to be the king as it was moral. And so Poongzhali becomes queen.
