Ponugupadu(Telugu : పొనుగుపాడు) pin-code 522549 is a village in Phirangipuram Mandal, Guntur District,Andhra Pradesh, India. The village is 12 km from Narasaraopet and 3 km from Sathuluru Railway Station ( on Guntur - Narsaraopet Line). Transport by auto rikshaw and APSRTC bus service is available from Narasaraopet. While travelling from Guntur on Guntur-Narsaraopet Road, one has to take right turn at Ponugupadu Bridge(on Nagarjunasagar Canal - Pedanandipadu Major), which is located between villages Merikapudi and Sathulur. The Residential habitat of village occupies 76 acers area. Rest of the village is agricultural land ( revenue land).

Temples

This village possibly dates back to about thousand years as evidenced by the lord shiva temple(old shivalyam) which was built in the time of chola's. This temple was repaired and restored in the late 1960s, with the initiative taken largely by one of the farmers of the village Mr. Katta Subbiah . Some old stone sculptures of deities from an abandoned temple of Village - Ameenabad, near Vemuluripadu, Guntur were brought with permission of the people of that village and consecrated.

There is another lord shiva temple which was built in 1913 by a local family known as Jampani Waru. This is a magnificent temple with Rajagopuram (Galigopuram), Brass cladded Dhwaja Sthambham and a Rock Sthambham (pillar). The presiding deity is Kasi Visweswra Swami. The temple also has a 'kalyana Mantapam' for community use.

The Anjaneya Swamy temple in the eastern part of the village possibly dates back to the times of Reddy Kings of Kondavidu. As per biography of Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu garu, written by Kodali Lakshminarayana of Moparru Village,Page 196, (available on the net) land grant of 1/2 kunchelu was sanctioned by the philanthraphic Zamindar, Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu, as Eenam for Nithya Naivedyam etc. Source: Ponukupadu grama kaifiyath LR 56,60. One Mr. Perumbudur Keshavacharyulu was appointed as the priest. He belonged to the Vaishnavite tradition of Kaundina Pancharathrulu. Currently the descendants of this family are not living in Ponugupadu.

    The village is home to 4356 people, among them 2213 (51%) are male and 2143 (49%) are female. 59% of the whole population are from general caste, 39% are from schedule caste and 3% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Ponugupadu village is 10%, among them 56% are boys and 44% are girls. There are 1217 households in the village and an average 4 persons live in every family.

From 2009 elections it is under Thadikonda constituency. The main political parties in this village are Telugu Dasam Party, Congress Party, ysr congress party and cpm party; Total number of votes in this village is 3200.

    Festivals

    They celebrate all festivals such like Sankrathri, Ramjan, and Christmas. The festival specific to this village is Ponugupadu Thirunala(festival),Abhinaya Nataka Parishat(State Level Drama Compitations) on behalf of lord shiva celebrated every year around March.

    Cultivation

    The main source of income for this village is cultivation. Rice, Chilli and Cotton is the main crops for the farmers here. The crops like Corn, Sorghum etc. are other choice here. Apart from regular crops, people here are also cultivate vegetables in all seasons. Tomato, Chilli, Brinjal, Lady finger are some of the vegetables cultivates here.
