Poland–Uruguay relations

Poland–Uruguay relations are foreign relations between Poland and Uruguay. Uruguay has an embassy in Warsaw.Poland maintains a General Consulate in Montevideo, under the Polish Embassy in Buenos Aires. As of mid-2013, there were reports that Poland considered re-opening its embassy in Uruguay.

History

Diplomatic links between Poland and Uruguay began on July 22, 1920, when the Polish envoy Count Orlowsky presented his credentials to the Uruguayan president Baltasar Brum. Between 1922-1936 the Polish legation in Argentina was accredited for relations with Uruguay.

During the Second World War, César Montero Bustamante was put in-charge of on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay for relations with the Polish exile government in London.

On February 15, 2012 Carlos Brugnini was named new Uruguayan ambassador to Poland.

Migration

There is a small group of people of Polish descent in Uruguay. The first Polish migrants to Uruguay arrived in the mid-19th century. In the years before the First World War (1905-1914), Uruguay received working-class migrants from Poland.
