History
Peppeganj was named after William Claxton Peppe, the manager of the nearby Birdpur estate near Piprahwa. Peppe gained fame as the discoverer of the alleged remains of the Buddha.
The area was historically a part of Awadh.

According to the 2001 census, Peppeganj has a population of about 40,000. Chief languages spoken include Awadhi Bhojpuri.
