The Pateliya is a scheduled tribe found in the state of Rajasthan in India.

History and origin

The term Pateliya is derived from the word Police Patel, whose ruled in village or which means a headman. They are found mainly in the districts of Kota, Jhalawar and Banswara. The community said originate in Dahod, Lunawada Districts of Gujarat and Jhabua, Dhar, Indore, Ujjain, Guna districts of Madhya Pradesh. They speak Malvi among themselves and Hindi with others.

Population in Gujarat: Approx 400000, Madyapradesh: 900000 and rajasthan 250000 people. Traditional Food habit: mainly vegetarian . makai,jowar,ragi(Bavto),toor and forest products

Present circumstances

The community is subdivided into exogamous clans such as the Hangaria, Mera, Gohari, Bhoria, Bhabhor, Hatila, Dindor (Dindod), Damra, Parmaria, Hania, Dhokiya,Bariya,Gohil,Rathod,Chauhan,Nalvaya,Bhabria, Musaria, Kocharia and Amliar.

The community traditionally practices settled agriculture, but they are landless, are the land owned is small, and insufficient to sustain them. Many migrate to Kota to work in the stone quarries. They profess Hinduism, and worship local deities such as Devkarji, Mataji, and Kalka devi.
