The bleachers surrounding the baseball diamond are a part of William Pomfret Stadium, as it reads on the back of the pressbox. In 1993 and 1994, the first two editions of the Ivy League Baseball Championship Series were held at the field, with Yale claiming its only titles in the event. The field has played host to the NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Tournament, with nearby Wesleyan University acting as host school. Also in 1988 and 1999 the field hosted the American Legion Baseball World Series. It has also held several regional American Legion tournaments.

The Middletown Giants of the New England Collegiate Baseball League used Palmer Field as their home park from 1994 to 2003 when the team moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts to become the Holyoke Giants.
