Plot

The film is a fictionalized account of the life of Rani Padmini, a legendary queen mentioned in Padmavat. She was the wife of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the ruler of Mewar. In 1303, Alauddin Khilji, the Turkic ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, laid siege to the Chittor Fort in Rajputana. According to Padmavat, Khilji led the invasion motivated by his desire to capture Rani Padmini.

Production
Pre-production on the film began in July 2016. That same month, playback singer Shreya Ghoshal tweeted about singing a song composed by Bhansali for the film. Many media outlets speculated that Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, who played the leads in Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015), were finalized to play Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmini in the film. Multiple actors were rumored to be attached to the part of Rani Padmini's husband Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, including Vicky Kaushal and Fawad Khan. Later it was speculated that Shahid Kapoor was approached for the role.
In October 2016, it was announced that Bhansali would team up with Viacom 18 Motion Pictures to produce the film with Kapoor, Singh and Padukone playing the lead roles.
During the shooting of the film in January 2017 in Jaipur, the members of Shri Rajput Karni Sena protested at sets at Jaigarh Fort alleging that the Bhansali depicted wrong facts in the film. They also tried to vandalise the sets.
On March 15, 2017 a group of unidentified vandals again attacked and set fire to the sets of this movie in Kolhapur.
Music
The film score composer remains unannounced as of December 2016. The songs featured in the film will be composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Shreya Ghoshal has already rendered a song. She will be singing four songs for the film. Deepika Padukone filmed a Ghoomar performance, a traditional folk dance, on a set that replicates the interior of Chittorgarh Fort. Rumors were made that Lata Mangeshkar has sung a Thumri song for the movie, however, Shahid Kapoor stated that no such song has been recorded yet. According to Ghoshal, "The film has some beautiful songs. The fusion of folk and larger than life arrangements and grander treatment is amazing. It is going to be a treat."
