Route description

Scheduled to be opened as early as November, 2018, this future 3-mile (4.8 km) interstate grade highway will traverse from US 158, in Walkertown, to I-40 Bus./US 421/NC 150, in Kernersville.

History

The proposed second NC 74 first appeared in June, 2014 on the NCDOT proposed route changes page. It was confirmed in August, 2014 when signage plans were released for the first section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway, traversing between Walkertown and Kernersville. Construction began in December, 2014 with an open to traffic date of November, 2018; final work would be finished by April 30, 2019.

The first NC 74 was an original state highway that traversed between NC 15, in Concord, to NC 50, south of Tramway, via Mount Pleasant, Albemarle, Pee Dee, Troy, Biscoe and Carthage. In 1927, NC 74 between Carthage and Tramway was renumbered as part of NC 75. In 1927 or 1928, NC 74 was extended west to NC 26, north of Huntersville. In 1930, NC 74 was rerouted between Huntersville and Concord. In 1933, NC 74 was extended north along US 21/NC 26 to Cornelius, then on new primary routing west to NC 271, in Triangle. In 1934, NC 74 was renumbered as NC 73 between Triangle to Pee Dee and NC 27 between Pee Dee and Carthage.

Future

NC 74 is dependent on the overall completion of the eastern section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway. It is unknown when the eastern section is completed and when I-74 replaces NC 74.

Exit list

The entire route is in Forsyth County.
