Race history

The race is named after jockey Neville Sellwood (1922−1962), who rode champions Tulloch and Todman, first Golden Slipper Stakes winner. Sellwood was also victorious in the USA and in 1962 and achieved what was perhaps his greatest success, victory on Larkspur in the Epsom Derby. Sellwood died after a fall in 1962 at Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse, near Paris, France.
