National Institute Of Technology Sikkim (NIT Sikkim or NITSKM) is an Institute of National Importance in Sikkim state of India. It is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India.

History

National Institute of Technology, Sikkim is one of the ten newly established NITs by the Government of India under the 11th Five year Plan, 2009. NIT Sikkim started functioning in August, 2010.

Campus

It is currently being operated from a temporary campus at the Barfung Block, in Ravangla Sub Division of South Sikkim. It is likely to continue its activities at Ravangla Campus until its permanent campus is built at Khamdong, Sikkim. It is managed by the NIT Sikkim Society registered under the Societies Act.

Academics

All courses and examinations are conducted only in English. NIT Sikkim offers a 4-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programme in four engineering fields. Admission to these programmes is taken through the National level engineering entrance examination - JEE (MAINS). Prior to JEE (MAINS), students were admitted through AIEEE.

Departments

NIT Sikkim started admitting students for the academic session 2010-11 with an intake of 30 students in each of the following branches of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes:

  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Civil Engineering (started in the year 2014)
  • NIT Sikkim is to avail Mechanical Engineering as a new branch for the academic session 2014-15.

    Admissions to the B. Tech program in the Institute are based on JEE (main, replacing AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and through the counseling conducted by the Central Counseling Board (CCB).

    Campus facilities

    Currently it is operating from a temporary campus at Ravangla. Its temporary campus still provides facilities to its students.

    Library

    The institute has a central library which caters to all the academic needs of students. The library also subscribes to a number of scientific journals and magazines.

    Internet accessibility

    The academic buildings are all Wi-Fi enabled. Computer labs are also connected to the internet through high speed LAN. Many hostels are provided with internet facilities and other hostels will also be provided with this in the near future.

    Auditorium

    There is an auditorium on the campus for important occasions and cultural events.

    Hostels

    The Institute provides on-campus boarding facilities to the students and the faculty members. It provides separate hostels for the male and female students with separate mess facilities.

    Sports

    The Institute has a playground with facilities for playing sports such as cricket and football. It also has the facilities to play sports such as badminton and table tennis. It also hosts intra-sports tournaments for its students which are handled by the student body of NIT Sikkim.

  • Xplode Cricket Cup is the annual intra-cricket tournament.
  • Sangharsh'. is the annual chess tournament.
  • Technical And Cultural Activities

    Udgam is the Annual Cultural Fest organised by the Student body of the Institute.

    Abhiyantran is the Annual Tech Fest of the Institute.

    The Electronics and Communication Department has a tech-society, Anuvrat, which organizes technical events and quizzes throughout the year.
