National Common Mobility Card or NCMC is an interoperable transport card conceived by the Ministry of Urban Development of the government of India. The Urban Development Ministry brought in the National Payments Corporation of India with the task of management, clearing and settlement of payments, simulating cards and terminals and maintenance of network. C-DAC is given the responsibility of developing standards and hardware for the card usage and the related ecosystems. NPCI is set to launch the NCMC by the end of the year 2016.

Technical specifications

The card will be of an open system based on EMV standards. The model will have a stored value, helpful in maintaining the identity.

History

A previous attempt to develop a similar national mobility card named as More Card was a failure. Following this, the then minister of urban development, Shri Venkaiah Naidu set up a Committee to recommend a card which is inter-operable across different transport systems in the country.
